This is the story of the "Enyobeni Tavern Massacre," an incident that shook entire country of South Africa, a ripple was felt throughout the world.
The Enyobeni Tavern can be found in the residentially dense Scenery Park in East London, Eastern Cape.
The South African Police Service said its officers were called to the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, a suburb on the edge of East London in Eastern Cape province, on June 26 at around 4 a.m. local time. When they arrived, they found 17 young people dead inside the club. Four more people passed away while being taken to hospitals.Police said the victims ranged in age from 13 to 17 -- all under South Africa's legal drinking age of 18.
On June 26, 2022, several people were killed in the Enyobeni tavern as part of a celebration of hlanjwa iphepha ('pens down,' a tradition in South Africa marking the end of school exams).
Nine girls and twelve boys aged between 13 and 17 died in the disaster. After emergency services were called, four people were taken to hospital, but the cause of deaths and injuries was unclear as of 26 June and an investigation had begun.
On July 19, it was revealed that all 21 of the dead had methanol in their bodies. "Alcohol poisoning" and carbon monoxide have been ruled out. According to Dr. Litha Matiwane, the provincial deputy director for clinical services for the Eastern Cape, authorities are still determining whether the detected levels of this toxic chemical were lethal or if another cause of death was present.
On June 29, the government announced that autopsies had been performed on each victim and that samples had been sent to a lab in the Western Cape for additional investigation.
Police gave the tavern owner and his wife access to the bar on June 30 so they could load bakkies with alcohol from the establishment. The owner let the media in, and they saw "Happy Birthday" balloons and broken chairs on the floor in the VIP area on the second floor, according to their reports. In order to give the families of the victims some closure, the Scenery Park Methodist Church prayed outside the structure that day and urged law enforcement to provide information on what caused the disaster.
Thousands of people showed up for the 21 victims' mass funeral service on July 6. Speakers at the event included President Cyril Ramaphosa and other dignitaries. Only two of the victims were buried that day, with the other 20 being reserved for later burial by their families in private ceremonies. Of the 21 coffins that were present at the service, 19 were empty and there as a symbol.
Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, expressed his sympathy to the catastrophe's victims. Siyakhangela Ngevu (the owner of the tavern), who was not present when the deaths occurred, apologised and called for calm. Ngevu stated that he "sympathised with the people who have lost their loved ones" and that it "wasn't my intention for this to happen"
The Throb nightclub disaster in Chatsworth in 2000, which resulted in the deaths of 13 children, raised concerns from the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) about whether the nation had learned anything. According to the NYDA, people then questioned why minors were in a nightclub, and now, more than 20 years later, the nation is dealing with a tragedy involving minors in a nightclub, illustrating "our lack of progress as a country." The NYDA urged parents to cooperate with law enforcement and report such underage activity in order to ensure a prompt and transparent investigation.
SANCO called on the government to declare Scenery Park a disaster area. Nomthunzi Mbiko, the regional treasurer for Buffalo City, claimed that the tavern had been the subject of prior complaints: "We visited the Scenery Park police station many times complaining about the tavern and the ECLB. Additionally, the police and ECLB need to show up and explain to us how they issued the license to the tavern owner and who signed the paperwork.
The Concerned Tshwane Liquor Traders Association advocated raising the drinking age from 18 to 21 and called for enforcement against underage drinking.
