Winter is confusing for houseplants, and honestly, for plant people too. Growth slows down, leaves yellow, tips dry out, and suddenly everything looks… off. The big question is always the same. Is this normal winter behavior, or is something actually wrong?
In this video, I’m doing a full winter plant check-in using my own collection. No perfect plants, no judgment, just real examples of what I’m seeing right now and how I decide what needs attention versus what can wait until spring.
We’ll start by walking through normal winter plant behavior, including slow or stopped growth, older leaves yellowing, dry leaf tips especially on Calatheas and Dracaena, and drooping during darker days that improves when light returns. I also talk about leaf drop in deciduous tropicals like Alocasia and some Ficus, and why this isn’t always a reason to panic.
Then we move into real warning signs that should not be ignored. Things like mushy stems or roots that point to rot, black spots that could be fungal or bacterial, rapid leaf loss, persistent wilting even after watering, and surprise winter pests like spider mites or fungus gnats. I’ll explain what these signs usually mean and what I personally do when I see them.
After that, I break down a simple troubleshooting flow. When it actually makes sense to repot in winter and when it really doesn’t. When pruning helps versus when it adds stress. When to isolate plants for pests, and what issues are usually safe to leave alone until spring growth returns.
This video is meant to help you slow down, observe your plants, and build confidence in reading what they’re telling you. Winter isn’t about forcing growth. It’s about maintenance, prevention, and understanding patterns.
If you’ve been worried your plant is dying, or you’re tempted to overcorrect everything, this check-in is for you.
I also talk about why journaling plant behavior can be so helpful, and how tracking small changes over time makes plant care feel way less overwhelming.
If you want a second opinion on one of your plants, leave a comment and tell me what you’re seeing. I love doing plant check-ins together.
