Join award-winning holistic psychologist, author, and keynote speaker Dr. Brenda Wade in this powerful session from the Rafiki Coalition's "Reclaiming Wellness" mental health spotlight series. This engaging talk, entitled “What are you waiting for? Five steps to living a life that you dream of,” provides attendees with essential tools to lift themselves up and share positive change with others. Dr. Wade emphasizes that the audience is present because they are ready to keep growing and learning.
The presentation explores the foundational concept of the 4Q (Four Quadrants), which are physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, noting that the goal is to work all four channels to support oneself. A key focus is defining mental wellness, which involves daily attention to one's feelings, examining how one treats others (avoiding projection), and committing to continuous learning and growth.
The session courageously addresses the significant disruptors to mental wellness, identifying trauma, specifically "living while Black trauma," as the number one disruptor. Other major disruptors discussed include anxiety, loss, and the systemic effects of enslavement, which installed self-loathing and taught communities not to trust each other. Dr. Wade highlights historical and present-day challenges, including Jim Crow, segregation, healthcare inequity, and the erosion of DEI programs. However, the core message is one of resilience: "You cannot keep brilliant, beautiful people like us down". If we can see the truth, we can heal it.
Dr. Wade outlines Five Steps to Reclaiming Mental Wellness that serve as powerful medicine:
1. Self-Care: This includes practices like protecting your peace, seeing a doctor, exercising, keeping boundaries, and learning how to say no.
2. Family Stability: Emphasizing the value of both bio family and chosen family for companionship, protection, support, and unconditional love.
3. Spiritual Practice: This is essential medicine and should be whatever practice works for the individual, whether it is prayer, reading the Bible, going to church, movement (like dancing or Tai Chi), or meditation. Meditation, specifically, helps the nervous system reboot and restore, bringing stillness and balance, which can be achieved in as little as 30 seconds. Connecting with Mother Earth, such as sitting under a tree, is also a scientifically proven spiritual path to lower anxiety and depression.
4. Embracing Growth and Learning: Staying committed to becoming better versions of ourselves every single day.
5. Rest as Resistance: Rest is a vital and non-negotiable step because the body can only heal, renew, and rebuild while resting. Historically, enslaved people did not have the luxury of rest, making it a critical act of resistance today. Even a 15 to 20-minute daily nap can cut the risk of heart attack and stroke by half.
Discover how these powerful practices offer a path to inner light and healing.
