Finding the Right Drill Bit for the Task – Brad Points to Rosette Cutters to Hardened Steel Bits

Описание: How do you find the right drill bit for a specific task? Obviously, you buy a large number of different drill bits and put them to the test. The drill bits that “let the smoke out”, so to speak, probably are not the right tool for the job, despite what the packaging states. A few old bits, as well as a few new bits “let the smoke out” in a head-to-head comparison in this video while cutting holes into ¾” thick #2 white pine, 1 ½” thick clear southern yellow pine that has been air drying for 15+ years, and ¾” thick black walnut.

There is an old saying that you get what you pay for, so don’t expect a lot from a 25 piece set of brad point drill bits that cost $18 (before tax) when you also have access to a 28 piece set of brad point bits that cost $352 (before tax). Maybe a spade bit, auger bit, Forstner bit, hole saws, fly cutters, Vix bits, countersink bits, cobalt bits, step bits, twist drill bits, or a concrete bit is more appropriate? This video is part 2.

A few points that you may have noticed from the video:
The standard twist drill bits had a tendency to drift from the expected hole location due to not using a center punch. The Dewalt drill bit was slightly less likely to walk away from the expected hole location than was the Porter Cable drill bit. Due to the sharp pilot points on the brad point bits, they were less likely to walk away from the expected hole location if they were started at 90 degrees. The 1980s brad point bit was slow, but left a decent surface finish. Most of the drill bits lost all resistance in the hole once the tip fully emerged from the bottom of the hole, which might cause the drill to slam into the board if pressure is applied to the drill during the cut. The Owl Tools 12” long brad point bit was the exception, oddly, there was very little difference in feel once the tip fully emerged. If a new drill bit causes the wood to smoke after cutting 6 holes in ¾” white pine and less than 6 holes in 1 ½” southern yellow pine, you might want to purchase a different set of bits.
