Decanters and belt presses are constantly competing in the area of dewatering of sewage sludge in sewage treatment plants. However, the experiences if the sewage treatment plant West Central Conservancy District in Indianapolis speak a clear and unmistakable language.
While the dry matter of the belt press was achieving average results in terms of dry substance, the two decanters improved this value significantly. Furthermore, a belt press is a screen system, which requires so-called complete flocculation. The sludge flock must be stable (selection of the correct flocculant is of high importance). Overdosing is the standard. At WCCD, the belt press required in part up to 19 liters of polymer per hour. In contrast, the Flottweg decanter required mere 5 - 7 liters of polymer per hour.
Beyond that, the decanter centrifuges offer additional advantages, such as significantly lower supervision efforts (fully automated system), less odor (closed system), and total operating safety thanks to measuring systems in the discharge.
