Okay I’m going to give you a quote right from the textbooks:
“In the aquarium cryptocorynes are confronted with large supplies of nitrate which they do not recognize. Since they cannot differentiate in their intake of nutrients, the nitrate is taken in by the plant in large amounts but is then stored in the tissue as {useless}
Overfertilization with nitrate for example, is considered to be one of the major causes of Cryptocoryne rot. For these plants, the smallest chemical or physical change in their environment can have catastrophic effects. Such effects can be caused by sudden changes in light or by chemical additives. However, irregularly provided fertilizers, sudden changes in CO2 supply, uncontrolled iron fertilization and water change occurring at too great intervals, can also cause these dismal results. The measures described will lead to the breakdown and reconstruction of the nitrate stored in the plants during the plants metabolic processes.
These and similar treatments, result in the occurrence of toxic intermediated compounds of nitrogen, which attack single leaves as well as entire plants, and consequently cause typical Cryptocoryne rot.”
