One year after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, thousands of supporters flooded the square in front of City Hall on Wednesday to protest what they call a "judicial coup." The rally, organized by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), served as a defiant show of strength against the government of President Tayyip Erdogan as the country heads toward a pivotal election year. Imamoglu, widely considered Erdogan's most formidable political rival, remains in pre-trial detention on corruption charges that could permanently disqualify him from seeking the presidency in late 2027.
