This week it was my pleasure and privilege to introduce the great novelist Lionel Shriver. Lionel has done that bravest of things; flouted the cosy consensus of her social and professional milieu.
To denounce the transgender craze, woke-ism, the Covid overreaction and mass migration from within the publishing industry in the last decade requires a level of courage that borders on the kamikaze. But Lionel has not been cancelled, despite some attempts, in fact she has just published a new novel which I can highly recommend.
It's called A Better Life, and explores what happens when a diehard progressive middle-aged New York mother and her listless twenty-something son take in a supposedly beleaguered migrant under a government programme.
The tensions and revelations of the experience brilliantly illuminate the absurdities of the West's acquiescence to mass migration. Needless to say, and for this very reason, many critics have not been kind. But I read the book thoroughly and cannot praise it highly enough.
In this episode, Lionel takes us through the perspective of her characters and opens up about other social issues, including the one that possibly exercises her the most, and might become the subject of her next novel - transgenderism. I hope you enjoy!
