This is the basic description regarding Mbbs AND MD
A Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is an undergraduate double degree. It is a level seven qualification on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) scale. A Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a postgraduate degree. It is a level nine qualification, offering a higher standard of education and outcome for the student.
Some universities offer a Bachelor of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine (BMed MD) undergraduate entry program in place of the MBBS for selection following completion of high school. These courses are both recognized by the Medical Board of Australia, therefore graduates of either are equally qualified to practice in Australia. At most universities it is possible to enter the MD program without a Bachelor degree in medicine or medical science. See our page on Australian medical schools for specific requirements.
It is important not to confuse the Doctor of Medicine (MD) with Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine (PhD Med) programs, as the PhD Med does not qualify graduates to practice medicine.
