A key member of the team behind Sheffield City Council’s multi-million pound Heart of the City scheme has insisted that business take-up for the project has been “really positive”, as the development comes to the end of its first major phase.
Costing around £430m, the Heart of the City scheme has seen the redevelopment of a huge swathe of Sheffield city centre, spanning 1.5 million square feet of space. Within the scheme are some of the city’s most notable projects of recent years, including Leah’s Yard, Pounds Park and the three-storey Cambridge Street Collective food hall.
Over the last year, however, the scheme has attracted criticism for many of its units remaining empty.
According to the latest figures from the council, 62 per cent of the scheme’s retail and food and beverage space has now been let, with over half of the remaining space in “active negotiation”.
