A quick explanation of the main issues that I have identified with the Morakniv factory plastic sheath included with the Garberg knife (i.e. relatively poor retention of the knife when in an inverted position, the lack of a standard built-in ferro rod holder, and lastly, a lack of mounting/wearing options).
In my estimation, the Morakniv factory plastic sheath offers fairly mediocre quality and functionality compared to the significantly higher quality of the well-known and well-reviewed Mora Garberg.
You will see in the video that I first attempted a simple fix to the factory sheath retention problem by installing a short length of shock cord around the belt loop in order to slip that over the butt of the knife, and admittedly, it does work to some extent, but it does interfere somewhat with the ability to easily slide a belt through the belt loop, it still doesn't provide full confidence for me that the knife will stay in place under inverted conditions and it's really not a very elegant solution.
I am also aware that Mora offers a separate but compatible "survival" add-on module that includes a ferrocerium rod holder, but given the additional expense of that, and the above-noted main issue of the knife retention in the sheath when inverted, and the lack of multiple mounting/wearing options without buying a different sheath, I instead opted to have a custom Kydex sheath made that addressed all of those issues.
Accordingly, I offer a quick review here of the custom Kydex sheath I ordered from Armorsheaths (Internet-searchable and based in the U.S.) to replace the factory sheath and enhance its functionality.
I should also note a couple of technical points about the Armorsheaths design that I missed in the video: First, there is a drainage hole built in at the bottom of the Kydex sheath in the case of inclement weather to help keep the blade's exposure to moisture minimized. Secondly, the sheath itself is fully compatible with Tek-Lok belt clips and molle attachments, so the dangler option is just one option for wearing the knife at the belt. I also ordered a Tek-Lok belt clip from Armorsheaths (that he beefs up to his build standards) so as to give me additional mounting options for the sheath if desired.
Please note: I have no business relationship whatsoever with Armorsheaths. I purchased this product with my own finances, and offer this short review as objectively as possible.
I would highly recommend Armorsheaths as a manufacturer. I'm very satisfied with the high quality of the design, manufacturing, and its fit/finish, and especially, with the significantly better knife retention of the Kydex sheath, and the built-in capacity of the ferrocerium holder with the design.
My only (very minor) criticism of it is that the dangler/belt loop components of the Armorsheaths assembly tend to rattle quite a bit as I received the product. However, that issue is easily addressed (and completely suppressed) by pulling a 1.5 to 2.0 inch section of bicycle innertube down over the articulating D-ring/loop assembly connecting the belt loop to the knife.
Armorsheaths offers many colour options for Kydex and can customize your order well beyond the "standard" customized models shown on his website. ("Standard" as I use the term here still means a sheath that is fully custom-fitted to your exact knife model). From there, it is a matter of what modifications you'd like to have in the design, and if you happen to have a knife that he doesn't have on-hand, he can make one especially for your knife.
