Keeping your lathe properly maintained is important for your safety and the life of the lathe. Follow these steps as a simple guideline for keeping your lathe in good, working shape.

To make sure your lathe is operating properly, follow this simple checklist before turning. Doing so will help your lathe last longer, perform better and keep you safe as well.

Check the condition of the lathe bed, tailstock and banjo and clear away any wood chips or other debris. If the Lathe bed is covered with rust, finish or other debris, remove it using steel wool and Rust-Free. To prevent rust and facilitate smooth operation, apply a thin layer of Boeshield T-9 to the bed surface and allow it to dry.

Clean the morse taper in the head and tailstock regularly. Debris such as wood dust, metal filings and other foreign material in the morse taper can result in centers not running true. More importantly, surface damage to centers and the interior of the morse taper will prevent them from seating properly during use and make them difficult to remove.

Open the access door to the headstock and clear wood chips and other debris from the pulley system.

Inspect the drive belt regularly. Look for cracks or breaks on both sides of the belt. If found, replace the drive belt as needed.

Check the lathe spindle for debris in the threads. Because finish, oils and wood can build up in the spindle threads making it difficult to mount and remove chucks. Inspect and clean regularly.

Ensure that the lathe sits level on the ground and inspect the lathe for loose nuts or bolts and tighten as needed. This prevents vibration and helps keep everything on the lathe secure.

Check the power cord and plug making sure they don't have any frayed wires or any damage to the plug.

If you follow these simple, yet important steps, turning will be more safe and enjoyable.
