Anime eyes are everything ✨—once you get them, the whole face clicks. Here’s a clear, beginner-friendly way to draw them, plus some style tips.
Basic Step-by-Step (Front View)
Start with the shape
Draw a slightly curved top line (like a soft sideways “S”).
Add a flatter or gentler curve for the bottom.
Big eyes = cute/young look. Smaller = mature/serious.
Add the iris
Usually large and touching the top eyelid.
A full circle or slightly cut off at top/bottom.
Pupil
Centered, smaller circle inside the iris.
Dark—often the darkest part of the eye.
Highlights (sparkle!)
1–2 white shapes near the top or side.
Never shade over these—this is what makes eyes feel alive.
Upper eyelash line
Thicker than the bottom line.
You can add small spikes or taper the ends.
Bottom lashes (optional)
Usually thin or just implied.
Often no individual lashes in anime style.
Shading the Eye (Simple but Effective)
Darkest at the top of the iris
Gradually lighter toward the bottom
You can add:
A darker ring around the iris edge
Soft gradients for depth
Different Anime Eye Styles
Cute / Chibi: Huge eyes, tiny nose, minimal detail
Shōnen: Sharp top line, simpler shading
Shōjo: Very large eyes, lots of highlights and gradients
Serious / Villain: Narrow eyes, heavy shadows, small highlights
Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Eyes too far apart (rule: one eye width between them)
❌ Same eye shape for every character
❌ Flat shading (gradients make a BIG difference)
