It is believed that the diamonds for which the mining companies and people spend their lives below the earth, people find them even while walking through the jungles of Panna.
But we did not come to Panna to find those buried shiny diamonds. Infact, we came to meet those diamonds, which wander on the surface of earth. So Discover Wild Paws welcomes you all to first episode of Panna.
So in between the morning chaos at Madla gate, we positioned our jeeps right at the front even before the gates opened. So that we can make the best use of the morning time to track tigers. This was our first visit to Panna and hence our enthusiasm was extremely high.
Whenever we go to any jungle for the first time, the entire trip goes in just appreciating the jungle’s beauty. Because everything is so new to the eyes, the sightings don’t really impact the experience. So let’s begin.
In the dense areas of the jungle, it is difficult for these animals to see a predator. And Panna has lots of tigers, leopards and hyenas. So, in these dense regions, the deer’s walk is very cautious. The big ones keep looking around and the little ones try to run and jump here and there.
Even if the deer cannot see anything, there is one animal in this jungle, which sees each and everything. Just like the elders of a family, these monkeys keep an eye on everything.
A little further, we heard some peacock alarm calls, but our guide felt that they were not loud enough.
While we were still appreciating the beauty of Panna, alarm calls started from all around the jungle. And we headed towards the grasslands. Finding a tiger or a leopard in these grasslands is most memorable. The reason being, unlike the dense forest, if you see a tiger here, then you can see it for good 10-20 minutes.
This landscape you are seeing currently, was once a fully habituated village with people living here. Basically, as the tiger count increased in panna, the forest department had to shift the villagers from here. Because if the human-animal conflict starts, then controlling the consequences gets very difficult.
A few years ago, Panna lost all its tigers but thanks to the forest department and the locals here, today, this forest is among the best in India to see wildlife. And this was only possible by maintaining a among different elements of the ecosystem.
Sitting comfortably in the cities and commenting on these topics is easy. But when you actually live in a jungle, then all the real problems unfold. Neither the villagers are at fault, nor the animals.
Because a couple of jeeps were waiting near the forest chowki, we decided to go further near the waterbody to check for any big cat movement.
Because this was December month, the jungle was not dry yet. All around there was tall grass and as a result, spotting tigers or leopards is not that easy. The only way we could find them is through alarm calls. The landscape of Panna is full of rocks and the lifeline of the park is Ken River.
Although, there were lot of alarm calls throughout the morning, but there was no sighting yet. The calls were closer to the gorge area and the tiger was probably walking inside the gorge.
As we came back from the grasslands, the real fun in the jungle started. The alarm calls got louder and the jeeps started coming from all around.
Suddenly, the jungle got super active. The monkeys, the spotted deer, the sambar deer, were all giving alarm calls. Listen closely and you will hear it too.
