STORYLINE
Italy returned to their home base in Duisburg to a raucous welcome as thousands of fans greeted the new world champions on their arrival from Berlin.
Beating drums and waving flags, thousands of Azzurri supporters waited in the darkness and morning chill to greet Italy as the side returned from Berlin to its home base.
The noise level went up dramatically when the team bus finally arrived at 0430 local time (0230 GMT), their newly earned World Cup trophy displayed prominently.
Players were greeted with applause and hugs by hotel staff.
Their 5-3 penalty shootout victory broke a 24 year World Cup drought for Italy, which last won in 1982.
It's the fourth time the Italians have lifted the trophy, putting the nation only one behind all time leaders Brazil.
And the win couldn't come at a better time for Italian football, which has been suffering through a match fixing trial that could shake the balance of power in the Serie A and send many of these players looking for new clubs.
The Italian victory will once again gives their supporters something to cheer about, and that's exactly what they did in front of the team hotel early Monday.
The Italian players obliged, stepping out onto the balcony of the Landhaus Milser Hotel to share their trophy.
But the party is just beginning and the welcome in Duisburg just a taste of what awaits the new world champions when they and the World Cup trophy return to Rome.
