It takes some serious brawn to bring in walleye eggs.
The Northern Lake Michigan Management Unit crew got a workout hauling up fyke netting filled with walleye from Little Bay de Noc this week. Staff from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ fisheries division and volunteers spent two full days on the bay collecting about 20 million walleye eggs.
The eggs were sent to the Thompson State Fish Hatchery to become the next generation of walleyes used to stock lakes throughout the Upper Peninsula including in Dickinson, Iron and Delta counties.
The crews on the nets sent load after load of mature walleyes to the Rapid River Public Access Site, where Thompson hatchery personnel handled the spawning process.
Females were stripped of their eggs, fertilized and sent to Thompson facility for incubation, the eggs should hatch in 20 to 30 days. The walleye “fry” then will be distributed among various rearing ponds throughout the region. Carney Lake in Dickinson County and Lake Mary and Chicagon Lake in Iron County are among those scheduled to be stocked this year.
