Maharashtra based lawyer Virat Vilas Pawar (@viratvilaspawar) shared the one time a client truly broke him. Not for heinous crimes but for heinous stupidity. His client was going through a messy divorce, and was set for an equally messy maintenance hearing. It looked like an open and shut case – his client didn’t even have enough money to pay one-time legal fees, let alone monthly maintenance. But, his client had a plan.

First, go back to his village. Then, sell land. Five or six days later, appear in court penniless, save for the legal fees. The slight flaw in the plan is that it was entirely constructed out of lies.

Virat finally appeared in court with the client and made his argument. “Look, he doesn’t even have money to pay my fees.” His client’s wife had a better argument: receipts. You see, while he was in his “village” “selling” his “land,” he’d also been posting on Instagram about his fancy holiday in Dubai. He’d at least thought to block his wife, but he didn’t know about her alt account.
