Fibroblast pens, often marketed as plasma pens, are frequently advertised as a non-invasive treatment for skin tightening and various skin concerns, including stretch marks. However, using a fibroblast pen for stretch marks is NOT an ideal or effective solution for several reasons:
Fibroblast pens work by creating small, superficial burns on the skin's surface, which stimulates a healing response. However, stretch marks (striae) are a form of dermal scarring that occurs deep within the skin layers. The shallow impact of fibroblast pens cannot reach the deeper dermal layers where stretch marks originate, making it ineffective at truly addressing the root of the problem.
Fibroblast treatments can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or worsening of scars, particularly in individuals with darker skin tones. This is a significant risk because stretch marks already represent a type of scarring, and further trauma to the skin can exacerbate their appearance rather than improve it.
There is limited clinical evidence supporting the use of fibroblast pens for stretch marks. Most data around fibroblast treatments involve mild skin tightening or wrinkle reduction, not the remodeling of scar tissue associated with stretch marks. Without solid evidence, patients may spend time and money on a treatment that is unlikely to provide satisfactory results.
Treatments like fractional lasers, such as CO2, Erbium have been shown to be more effective for stretch marks because they penetrate deeper into the skin, promoting collagen and elastin production in the affected areas. These treatments are designed to remodel scar tissue more effectively and can improve the texture and appearance of stretch marks over time.
