Police are allegedly creating hurdles for Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers filing nominations for the MPTC and ZPTC elections in Andhra Pradesh by placing barricades in their way. However, YSRCP workers are reportedly being given a free passage, with police assisting them in filing their nominations. When TDP workers question this unequal treatment, they are allegedly subjected to police lathi charges. Election rules must apply equally to all political parties. However, the way police are enforcing these rules in the Dharmavaram Sub-Division of Sri Sathya Sai district appears to vary depending on the party. TDP workers approaching nomination centres are being stopped in the name of regulations, while YSRCP workers are reportedly being allowed to enter without similar restrictions. Incidents during the nomination process in Chennekothapalli, Kanaganapalli, Battalapalli and Tadimarri mandals have raised serious questions about the police's conduct. In Chennekothapalli, only two TDP members were reportedly allowed inside, while as many as 30 YSRCP members were permitted to enter. In Battalapalli and Tadimarri, YSRCP workers allegedly received police protection. Despite there being no apparent threat to law and order, CI Ismail and SI Satyanarayana reportedly resorted to lathi charges against TDP workers, leaving several party members injured. Similar incidents were reported at several nomination centres in the Rapthadu constituency, where local police officers at the SI and CI levels allegedly acted in a one-sided manner against peaceful coalition party workers while providing protection to YSRCP members. TDP MLA Paritala Sunitha and other leaders lodged a complaint with the district Superintendent of Police regarding the issue. Meanwhile, in the Badvel and Proddatur areas, police allegedly remained silent spectators even when YSRCP workers tore up the nomination papers of TDP candidates. Although coalition leaders and workers had obtained prior permission to be present near the nomination centres, police reportedly placed barricades to restrict TDP workers under the pretext of security. In contrast, vehicles carrying YSRCP leaders were allegedly allowed to reach the centres directly. In several mandals, the police are accused of openly favouring YSRCP, with senior officers seemingly backing the actions of their subordinates. Democratic observers have expressed concern that if such practices continue, public confidence in the electoral process could be seriously undermined, posing a threat to the democratic system. These developments have raised serious questions about the impartiality and accountability of the police during the election process.
