Rakiya’s journey began when she worked with the DC Hospital Association. There, she focused on creating a safe environment for patients in birthing hospitals with preeclampsia and worked on studying and advocating for black women from underserved DC wards who had the condition.

“As I got closer to giving birth, I found out that I had preeclampsia,” she says.

This coincidence brought this complication closer to home and gave her first-hand experience with hospital workers.

Throughout her pregnancy, Rakiya spent a lot of time working with nurses: “I saw my nurses more than I did any of the physicians, and I just loved everything they did.”

These nurses had an impact on her overall experience as a patient. She shares how they went above and beyond to make her feel comfortable and safe, which led her to a nursing career.

Because Rakiya had already earned a previous bachelor’s degree, she wanted to find ways to accelerate the nursing school timeline.

“I wanted to get into this as quickly as possible and found that NDMU had an accelerated program. It was 15 months. It was short, it was quick,” she says.

This is possible through the ABSN program’s hybrid format, which combines online nursing coursework with in-person skills and simulation labs and clinical rotations at nearby medical facilities.

“The counselors were phenomenal,” Rakiya says. “They worked with me. So I knew at that point, this is where I needed to be.”
