Today on our 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan we'll be installing the CURT class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C12264. Now here's what our hitch will look like once it's installed. As you can see, the body of the hitch is hidden behind the rear bumper or fascia. The hitch is a full steel and welded construction with a square cross tube for a real heavy duty design. This is our class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch with our 1/2" pre-drilled hole. It has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds and a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds.
Along with the body of the hitch being hidden, it's got a powder-coated finish to help resist rust and corrosion. Next I'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 5". From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. Now to begin our install we'll first need to lower the exhaust on the passenger side. To do that we're going to remove the hanger hardware that secures it to the body or frame of the vehicle.
We have one on the tailpipe and one just forward of the rear axle behind the muffler. We can give the exhaust a slight pull down and gain access to the two attachment points here on the passenger side. We're going to remove the manufacturer's hardware from the frame, hanging onto the hardware, as we're going to use it for the install. Now we've identified and removed the hardware for two of our five fasteners. On the driver side we're going to use the three rear frame fasteners, also being our attachment points. Quick tech tip: Once you remove the three fasteners here on the driver side it allows the nut plate in the frame to shift around.
As you can see, here at the forward attachment point the weld nut does not quite line up with the attachment point. It may be necessary once you get your hitch into position to use a pry bar and slide that weld nut over so that it lines back up with the hitch. Now that it's lined up, then you can reinstall the hardware. We're now ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place. We're going to take the passenger side, feed it up above the tailpipe, and then bring the driver side up to the frame and reinstall the manufacturer's fasteners. Keep in mind, here on the driver side we're also going to have to adjust the nut plate as we put our hardware in.
I'm going to start with my rear attachment point because I can get it in place without having to adjust the nut plate. As we reinstall our fasteners we'll install each one finger tight until we have them all in place. Now once all our fasteners are installed we can go ahead and tighten them down. Once they're tightened down we can go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions, keeping in mind as we tighten them down, each process we do here on one side will get repeated identically on the opposite side. Now once we have all our fasteners tightened down and torqued to specifications we'll go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Just like that our hitch is installed and we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the install of our CURT class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number C12264, on our 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. .
