Aero Legends Vickers Supermarine Spitfire IXT, NH341, is essentially a new build Spitfire using the substantial remains of the original NH341 and another Spitfire for patterns and parts where possible. The original NH341, a Mk. LFIX single seat Spitfire powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin 66 engine, was part of a tenth order on 1/12/42 for 600 Spitfire Mk. IX's that were manufactured between April and June 1944 by Supermarine Aviation (Vickers) Ltd. She was issued to No.8 RAF Maintenance Unit on 28/4/44 and went ti Miles Aircraft Ltd on 17/5/44 for modifications, before being issued to 411 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force in June 1944. She failed to return from operations over France on 2/7/44 when Warrant Officer James'Jimmy' Jeffrey of 411 Squadron, 126th Wing RCAF, flying from Advanced Landing Ground B4 at Beny-sur-Mer with 2 other Spitfires, was involved in combat with a schwann of four German Fw190's, sustaining engine damage which caused oil to spread over the Spitfire's windscreen and WO Jeffrey bailed out, landing north west of Orbec. The remains of his aircraft were recovered in 1996 and spent time on display, along with wreckage from another 411 San. Spitfire ML295, at the Musee Memorial de la Bataille de Normandie at Bayeux and the Juno Beach Museum at Courseulles-sur-Mer. The remains of NH341 were purchased by Keith perkins, the owner of Aero Legends, in 2011 and then moved in 2014 to Duxford for restoration to airworthy condition as a two seat IXT trainer. The aircraft is now powered by a Packard Merlin 266 engine and finished in the colours of its first 411 RCAF Squadron pilot, Flt. Lt. Bruce Whiteford, as he also flew the aircraft more times than any other pilot on the Squadron. The name Elizabeth on the left hand side of the aircraft and Eo on the right, are the first name and nickname respectively of flt. Lt. Whiteford's wife.
After completion of the rebuild by Historic Flying ltd at Duxford, the aircraft's first flight was on 11th March 2017.
