STORYLINE:
The medals that are to be awarded to athletes at the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic games were presented to the media on Thursday in Saint Petersburg.
The medals for the 2014 Winter games feature a "patchwork quilt" design representing the different regions of Russia.
Organisers produced a record 1,300 medals for the Olympics and Paralympics, which will be held in the Black Sea resort next February and March.
The medals depict the sun's rays reflecting through a prism of mountains and beaches.
The design was approved on Thursday by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) executive board.
Jean-Claude Killy, the chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for Sochi 2014, described the medals as "magnificent".
Killy acknowledged there was still much to be done to prepare for the Games but he was certain that the sites would be ready in time.
The medals are 0.4 inches (one centimetre) thick and 4 inches (10 centimetres) in diameter.
The Olympic gold medals weigh 16 ounces (0.45 kilograms).
