Staff Bandmaster: COLIN WOODS
"Staff Bandmaster COLIN WOODS has held this responsible position since 1969. A brilliant euphonium player with the Staff Band for 14 years prior to his appointment as Bandmaster, he is held in high esteem by the bandsmen and other musicians of Australia. Colin is the Chief Manager for Systems Development of the Electronic Data Processing Section of the National Australia Bank, and with such a heavy workload, still finds time to be a member of the Territorial Music Board, and represent The Salvation Army on several committees."
"In the same year that William Booth, Founder of The Salvation Army, lit the flame of hope for the poor and deprived in England by publishing his charter "In Darkest England, and the Way Out", there was another significant Army beginning, 12,000 miles away in Australia.
That other Army beginning in the infant movement "Down Under" saw the commencement of another special ministry that has not wearied nor diminished in desire or motivation throughout its 96 years.
The year was 1890 - The successful usage of brass bands by The Salvation Army, first in England and then by the first Australian Salvationists, led almost naturally to the formation of a band to be attached to the National Headquarters.
So into the gaslit, cable trammed, build-or-bust atmosphere of post-gold boom Melbourne marched the original nine or ten members of the Melbourne Staff Band.
The years that have followed have seen a kaliedoscopic pattern of Army service and activity, and a developing style that has always sought to attune its ministry to the times, in God's name.
From its first leader, Jeremiah Eunson, through to Colin Woods, now Bandmaster for seventeen years, from walking, marching, cycling, motor cycling, motoring to Jumbo jetting to Europe, Britain, U.S.A., Canada and New Zealand, on musical campaigns; from being one of the first brass bands to be heard on radio in Australia to be part of an Australian networked "Sounds of Sunday" television programme on a regular basis, the Melbourne Staff Band has proved itself the equal in musicianship of any comparable group in the Army world.
The highlights of a Staff Band year are many, Australian Interstate visits, weekend Corps Campaigns, Special Meeting, Army Music Board Auditions, the Christmas Eve "Carols by Candlelight" Festival, preparation of recordings, are just a few."
