Juke Box Jury was the must-see panel show of the sixties. It premiered newly-released (or soon-to-be released) pop records. The panel of guest celebrities, known as jurors, had to critique each of the new songs and vote on whether it would become a hit or a miss. Because they were typically middle-aged, un-cool celebrities they frequently got it wrong!
The programme was a primetime Saturday evening show on BBC Television and ran from 1959 until 1967. It was hosted by the ever suave, urbane and highly professional David Jacobs.
The Juke Box Jury theme tune was 'Hit and Miss' by the John Barry Seven Plus Four, John Barry being the composer of many James Bond title songs and other film scores such as The Ipcress File.
The show was revived in the late 70s and again in the late 80s. It was also fondly parodied as Soap Box Jury by Benny Hill who played all the parts.
'Well jurors, is it a hit or is it a miss?' In fact the theme tune Hit and Miss itself became a hit and reached number 10 in the UK pop charts in 1960.
