Turkish military officials claimed on Wednesday (17/12) that 182 Kurdish separatist guerrillas had been killed during the operation launched by the army in northern Iraq on December 5. The operation against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the mountainous Khakurk region of northern Iraq, had ended on Monday. Aimed at stamping out PKK attempts to establish and stock mountain bases for winter, the operation was declared a success by the army which claimed it had seized weapons, ammunition, and 807 tonnes of food worth a total of 1.7 million dollars. A communique said the Turkish forces were backed by the Iraqi Kurd group, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), adding that the army had suffered no casualties while seven KDP fighters were wounded.
