PREVIEW: Shreyas Iyer's captaincy credentials will be tested but India's team management would also closely monitor Suryansh Shedge's performance as a back-up for Nitish Kumar Reddy when they formally begin their 2028 Olympic preparations with the T20I series against Ireland on Friday.

Shreyas has managed to secure his T20I recall just in time for the two games against Ireland while top draw Suryakumar Yadav will miss the series due to a sustained run of poor form.

As India plan for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in July-August 2028, there are doubts over whether the 31-year-old Shreyas can last till the T20 showpiece.

India are scheduled to play plenty of T20Is before the mega event, giving the team enough time to experiment with players and combinations.

With a fresh leadership transition, the start to Shreyas Iyer's T20I captaincy will be closely watched and working alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir, he would be looking to expand his footprint in the dressing room.

Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan are expected to open the innings while there would be a toss-up between comeback man Sanju Samson and teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at number three in Suryakumar's absence.

Newly appointed T20 captain Shreyas Iyer will bat at number four. Both Shreyas and Tilak linked with the India squad in Belfast before the team travelled to the historic ground on Thursday.

Tilak Varma, the vice-captain batter in the side, is part of the middle-order and Suryansh Shedge is likely to follow him in the batting line-up at number six.

Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna form the pace battery while Prince Yadav or Harshit Rana could make their international debut as the third fast bowler.

Both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested from the series for workload management.

Ireland would take heart from their T20 World Cup performance earlier in 2026 when they put up a spirited fight under tough conditions.
