I met with up with my friend and coach Richard of Phoenix Self Defense to do a demonstration of how to throw a punch for beginners. I have actually been asked this a lot by female clients so I thought this would make a good video.
Start in an athletic stance, lined up in profile with your feet spread a bit and perpendicular to each other, keep knees soft, and core braced.
Keep your hands up to protect your face and your chin slightly tucked. As you throw the punch, rotate through your hips and shoulders while extending the arm straight toward the target. Use your whole body and pivot your feet.
Your fist stays aligned with your wrist, thumb wrapped outside. When you strike, you should aim to hit your target with only the pointer and middle finger of your fist. Exhale sharply on impact, then snap the hand back to guard. Power comes from the ground up!
