College & Recovery: Can They Coexist? (What You Need to Know)
Everyone's going to college. But you're in recovery. Can you handle campus drinking culture without relapsing? Yes — but only if you do it right. Here's the plan.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
The reality of campus life in recovery (triggers everywhere)
The 3 options (delay, commute, on-campus with support)
How to do college sober (6-step recovery plan)
Handling social pressure (what to say when people push)
TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 — Can college and recovery coexist?
0:15 — The reality of campus drinking culture
0:35 — The triggers: alcohol, drugs, freedom, stress
1:25 — The 3 options (choosing the right path)
2:30 — How to do college sober (6-step plan)
3:50 — Handling social pressure
4:45 — College + recovery = possible with a plan
THE 3 OPTIONS:
Option 1: Delay College (Gap Year)
Who: 1 year sober, unstable recovery
Do instead: Work, sober living, community college part-time
Why: Build stronger foundation before high-risk environment
Option 2: Commuter College (Live at Home)
Who: 1-2 years sober, solid home support
Do: Classes only, go home every night
Why: Avoid dorm parties, maintain family support
Option 3: On-Campus with Recovery Support
Who: 2+ years sober, strong foundation
Do: Live on campus WITH recovery plan (non-negotiable)
Why: College experience + sobriety (requires structure)
THE 6-STEP RECOVERY PLAN FOR COLLEGE:
Choose the right school (recovery-friendly campuses, collegiate recovery programs)
Housing matters (sober dorms or off-campus with sober roommates)
Find sober community Week 1 (campus AA/NA, recovery programs, non-drinking clubs)
Build support structure (therapist, sponsor, sober friends, family check-ins)
Avoid high-risk situations (no frat parties, bars, or Adderall culture)
Have exit plan (if struggling, come home; if relapse, leave immediately)
HANDLING SOCIAL PRESSURE:
"Why don't you drink?" → "I'm in recovery" / "Not my thing"
"Just one won't hurt!" → "Nah, I'm good" (walk away)
"You're boring now" → "Cool" (find better friends)
SOBER FUN IN COLLEGE: Late-night diners, concerts, hiking, gaming, gym, movie nights, volunteering. Yes, sober fun exists.
THE HARD TRUTH: Going to college with 1 year sobriety and no plan = relapse waiting to happen. If you're not ready, delay. Graduating at 23 is better than dying at 19.
