AV1 Video format
AV1 is an open and royalty-free video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), a joint venture between Amazon, Netflix, Google, Microsoft, Cisco, and Mozilla, who were all frustrated by the royalties involved with H.265.
Apple is on board with the AOM, but Apple devices don’t yet support the codec.VP10 was engineered by Google to be the successor of VP9 but was incorporated into the AV1 (AOMedia Video 1).
AV1 is supported by.mkv, MP4,.webm, ISO base media file format (.3gpp), and WebRTC containers.
AV1 offerS highly efficient bitrates, providing savings over VP9, HEVC, and AVC, especially for ultra-HD video content at 4K or 8K.
Emerging as a preferred codec for high-quality streaming and online video services due to its efficiency and royalty-free nature.
Pros:
• Designed to provide advanced compression efficiency, potentially surpassing H.265 and VP9.
• AV1 is an open standard with no licensing fees, making it cost-effective for content creators.
• 30% more efficient than H.265/HEVC.
Cons:
• AV1 still lacks optimization for encoding and decoding, operating much slower than most of its counterparts.
• It also has been known to require long encoding times, so although the codec is free, there may be increased encoding costs.
• This may impact the efficiency of the content creation process, especially for real-time applications.
• AV1's widespread adoption is still in progress, and some platforms or devices may not fully support this codec, leading to compatibility challenges.
• It’s new and too early to tell if it will be widely adopted. AV1 Video format
