In the heart of a frontier winter, with the wind howling outside and
the snow piling up against the walls, a log cabin was a sanctuary, a
small pocket of warmth and of light in a vast and frozen wilderness.
But that warmth was hard-won. Wood was a precious resource, and
the work of cutting, splitting, and hauling it was a constant, back
breaking chore. Every stick of firewood was a measure of a man’s
labor, a unit of his life force. I have often wondered what it must
have been like to wake up in the middle of the night, the fire burned
down to embers, the cold seeping through the walls, and to know
that your family’s survival depended on your ability to keep that fire
going. And so, the pioneers were obsessed with efficiency. They
were constantly looking for ways to get more heat from less wood,
to make their small, drafty cabins as warm and as comfortable as
possible.
We tend to think of the old log cabins as primitive, inefficient
structures, drafty and cold and smoky. And many of them were. But
the best of them, the ones built by the true masters of the craft,
were marvels of thermal efficiency, structures that were designed to
capture and to hold every precious bit of heat. And they had a trick,
a simple, elegant, and almost forgotten technique that could make a
cabin 20 degrees warmer with the same amount of wood. It was a
trick that was born of necessity, a trick that was a testament to their
ingenuity, their resourcefulness, and their deep, intuitive
understanding of the physics of heat.
My name is Sam, and this is Wild America.
