Alphard (α Hya, α Hydrae, Alpha Hydrae) is the brightest star in the constellation Hydra. The name Alphard is from the Arabic الفرد (al-fard), "the solitary one", there being no other bright stars near it. The European astronomer Tycho Brahe dubbed it Cor Hydræ, the heart of the snake.
With apparent magnitude of 1.98, It is not particularly bright as a second-class star, but as it is situated among the other less bright stars in the surrounding constellations such as the Sextans and the Crater as well as its own, the orange colour Alphard can be easily spotted. The spectral classification is K3, and luminosity class between II and III. It has become a giant star, and the distance from the Earth is 177 light years. (-Wikipedia [Alphard])

The stage for Kawamura’s piece will be divided into nine squares defined by the lighting. Each square, clearly cut by the light, comes up one by one, featuring different music, and Kawamura dances to it traveling from one box to another. Having designed and composed all the elements of the piece by herself, from the art to lighting and music, Kawamura explains the piece is like to “step on the perceptions”. Her performance has been appraised by critics as delicate and powerful with superb skills in composition and execution.

Mikiko Kawamura　川村美紀子

Born in 1990. Began street style dance from the age of sixteen. While still a student at Japan Women’s College of Physical Education, majoring in dance, Kawamura won the Outstanding New Artist Prize at Yokohama Dance Collection EX 2011.

After premiering her solo work “Alphard” at the Yokohama Dance collection EX 2012, it was shown at Dance Triennale Tokyo 2012, Japan; Malta Festival Poznan 2013, Poland; Perforations Festival 2013 in Zagreb, Croatia; Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance Festival 2013 in Hanoi, Vietnam; 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan; Contemporary Dance Showcase: Japan + East Asia 2015 at Japan Society, NY, U.S.A.

She has also performed her work at Seoul International Dance Festival (SIDance) 2011 in Korea and JoJo-Oulu Dance Festival 2013 in Finland. As an artist in residence in Romania and worked in collaboration with artists from Finland and Croatia.

By her group piece “Inner Mommy”, she received the Next Generation Choreographer Award and the Audience Award at the Toyota Choreography Award in 2014, and she won Jury Prize and The French Embassy Prize for Young Choreographer at Yokohama Dance Collection EX 2015.

Her work on a show starts with a vision, with a group of images, which she then consistently transforms into a stage reality. She works in a comprehensive manner being the author of music, lights and visual setting. Kawamura combines multitasking and testing of ever new activities with accurate planning of her own choreography. She describes her dance as an attempt to express parallel worlds – the constellations of never used alternatives, which often go unnoticed.

In fiscal years 2014-15, she is a Junior Fellow at the Saison Foundation.
