Jenna Klink, Evaluation & Program Development Specialist, interviews Patrick Robinson, Associate Dean for Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Community Development at UW-Madison Division of Extension, on tips for implementing nominal group technique.
Highlights from video:
Lean into the simplicity of the method
Be adaptable
-The process can be flexible while as a facilitator, you're still holding a vision for the outcome (what you & the group is wanting to achieve through the process)
-Ask the group for input on the method, e.g. "Here's what I'm thinking for process; what would you prefer?"
-Pay attention to group's personality and "adapt to their signals of how they want the process to work"
-An example of how you may shift - you come in with an idea of how many votes to give each person, but you may change that based on what is emerging.
Manage it in a way that everyone has a voice
As you explore ideas that come up, verbal processors can start to dominate the conversation unless you're really intentional about giving others space to speak
