I was on a roll with beat em ups, and what do you know, Battle Circuit is also one of the rare ones with SUSPICIOUSLY generous extends! Thus, this is my next beat em up 1cc clear. I LOVE IT!
To reiterate, I'm no expert about beat em ups, but zany space merc aesthetics aside, there are 2 notable things with this game: it has economy and the buff bomb, the Download thing, when you do the Mega Crush in the air. That means no aerial Mega Crushes but when you still have the Download stock you still can exploit the i-frames it provides as a bonus (or perhaps the much more useful purpose) with the buff it provides. The shop is where not only you get more resources like the Download stock and extends, but also provide MOVESET UPGRADES and HP MAX BOOSTERS! This may be a baseless statement, but I think Battle Circuit is one of the missing links between our good ol' classic belt scrollers and the now revered character action games. One staple of character action games is the shop where you gain new moves. This game has it, in a proper arcade structure!
The moveset of this game is also rich and distinct for each character, although the usefulness varies pretty wildly. You can run, attack and jump. As per Capcom staple, the combo can be stringed into a throw by holding up or down at the end of the combo. But of course, this game is less forgiving than Streets of Rage 2. Duh, this is an arcade title. There are other skill attacks that can be stringed mid-combo or while grabbing like the uppercut, down up then attack. Some are more unique like using Pink Ostrich, you can hover for a pretty length time and the downward multi-hit kick is super good! I choose her because defensively she is the easiest to use.
Also personally the bosses aside of the TLB are not as cheap as the older titles. Though it might be more of a case where your moveset is much more capable of handling the pressure compared to those old ones. A pretty long hover, for pete's sake! The skill strikes are also not only cover a good range, but it knocks enemies down reliably too. Safe to use! I don't know any infinites in this game, but you still can do extra damage to knocked down enemies by throwing them in some cases.
The craziest thing is probably accessing the TLB itself, which I think is a rarity among beat em ups. A single-loop TLB, at that! This is before Dangun Feveron! I heard the TLB can still be accessed with continues, but let's assume for now that you can't do that. Before the branch check, the moment you beat the normal final boss, you need to get 3.2 m score and you either keep 1,000 coins or have bought 6 upgrades. Not extends, HP or Downloads, but the skill upgrades. It is perhaps for the better because I'm not skilled enough to face that jerk :P
It's a super fun and solid game! If you like character action games and want to dip your toes to the older era, I think this is a title that I can wholeheartedly recommend as the transition title.
This is the Nintendo Switch version on the Capcom Arcade Stadium.
