This is part 2/2 of TSPH reading + Honest Thoughts part 3.
Unlike Florida Man Volume 1. The Citizen actually has a plot and implements some of the same ideas. Except it is for a slightly younger audience and the art style is more cartoonish.
The graphic novel is written by Charlie Mcfarland with art by Aleksandar Jovic and published by Action Lab Comics, Entertainment.
The plot centers around Norman Shaddler. An average joe, journalist who lives in a city full of super beings. And Norman is slowly getting tired of living in this godforsaken place.
It basically takes the mickey out of the oversaturated superhero genre that has been milked to death.
Final verdict Part 1 and 2
Florida Man Vol I:
Not entirety terrible. Except for the lower part of the cover. Art and pacing need more consistency. Some parts needed a little more editing.
For me it feels kind of repetitive after a while.
And what boomers sometimes forget is that memes don't always age well.
Maybe it would have worked better as 5 seperate issues.
Did this volume convince me to get the second one?
Nope. I was pretty much done a little more than halfway through.
Only a few characters got my attention.
I still don't know about the rest nor what their purpose is supposed to be.
Like at all
I kind of understand why @ryumav doesn't like it either.
60/100
The Citizen Volume 1
Unlike Florida Man Volume 1. The Citizen actually has a plot and implements some of the same ideas. Except it is for a slightly younger audience and the art style is more cartoonish where Florida Man Volume 1 has a more realistic artstyle.
But what matters for me is the writing.
I rather buy a comic, graphic novel, manga with good, great writing and bad, decent art than something with beautiful art and bad writing. (Sounds hypocritical I know. I bought a lot of books with good art, not very good writing. So you have the right to roast me)
And in terms of writing, pacing and flow. The Citizen has the better balance between artstyle and writing.
Charlie Mcfarland, Aleksandar Jovic and Action Lab Comics, Entertainment have created a graphic novel of exceptional quality that unfortunately gets overlooked for some reasons that I don't get. And implemented certain ideas in a better way than Mike Baron did in Florida Man Volume 1.
Therefore I give The Citizen Volume 1 the edge.
An 90/100 is in order.
You could check Florida Man Volume 1 out on Amazon and the official website if you want to figure out for yourself.
Or check CGNOW if you are one of those die hard CG folks.
I hardly use the latter. Only a few graphic novels, comics stand out on that site. For me at least.
But I prefer to give people options so that they could make up their own minds about it before spending their money on their favourite creators, products.
