Why are self-infantilization and the “trad wife” trend gaining popularity among young women today especially at critical career turning points?
In this video, I offer a clinical, trauma-informed explanation of self-infantilization, the appeal of the trad-wife aesthetic, and how both can be understood through the lens of Trauma and nervous-system regulation.
Self-infantilization is not immaturity or weakness. Clinically, it is often a trauma-adapted coping response. This is rooted in early relational or developmental trauma.
Trauma responses are associated with freeze or submit responses, where the body prioritizes survival through minimization rather than action. When this survival strategy is later used as a lifestyle choice, it can quietly reinforce fear of autonomy instead of supporting healing.
This helps explain the emotional appeal of the trad-wife aesthetic. It promises simplicity, protection, and relief from decision-making. The concern is not about homemaking or choosing family-centered lives. The concern arises when dependency is idealized without economic literacy, emotional capacity, or exit options, particularly for women who have not yet built internal or external resources.
This is where Applied Natya Therapy (ANT) offers a recovery-oriented model. ANT works through embodied practices. Healing is not about choosing one role over another; it is about rebuilding the body’s capacity to choose.
True empowerment means choice grounded in strength.
