This is the Omega Speedmaster Professional ‘Moonwatch’, model number 311.30.42.30.01.005

The first thing you will notice about this watch is the particularly large presentation box that it comes in.

This box opens up to reveal a fabric case bearing the iconic case back, detailed embroidery of the title and contrasting white stitching along the case straps.

Behind this case, you will find the usual warranty card and an instruction booklet. Also if you lift the inner case you will find another instruction manual for removing the bracelet and also a booklet that gives a history of the Speedmaster and its role in space exploration.

The inside of the case is comparatively quite minimal with a simple back finish. All of the accessories are neatly hidden away in two compartments. In the first, you will find alternative watch straps (a ‘NATO’ and a Velcro strap), a tool for removing the bracelet and replacement spring bars. In the second compartment, they have even included an Omega eyeglass.

This is the only watch ever to be approved by NASA to be used in all piloted space missions right up till modern day. Interestingly the Speedmaster was originally designed as a watch for racing drivers until it was worn by Buzz Aldrin when he stepped on the moon in 1969: which is when it became known as the ‘Moonwatch’.

Looking at the watch very little has changed in the design since the original. It has a black face with matching chronograph sub-dials, black tachymeter bezel and a brushed stainless steel case: A classic and timeless design, one that could be worn on both formal and casual occasions. At 42mm it should fit comfortably on most wrists.

On the back of the case, you will find an engraving with the message: “Flight qualified by NASA for all manned space missions. The first watch worn on the moon”.

It is a manual wind watch with hesalite crystal protecting the dial – which is the way it has been since the very first Speedmaster. The hesalite is easy to polish out scratches and also cheaper to replace than sapphire crystal if you have an accident.

On the side, you will see a mixture of both brushed and polished metal. Likewise, the bracelet is brushed metal with small polished details.

Overall Omega has given the presentation of this a lot of thought and created something very fitting to a watch with so much history and one which has become a staple in most watch collections.
