When it comes to speed development, the ‘shotgun approach’ – where you just work on most of the things most of the time – will generally lead to improvement, especially with younger athletes. But a more targeted approach is obviously superior.
A good coach will work to understand an athlete’s strengths, as well as what they are limited by. They will then put together programs based upon this information.
Which is where science comes in.
Remember – “identify what matters / measure what matters / change what matters”
So what matters to running fast, and staying healthy?
Well – as we have pointed out over the last week or so – the most-important biomechanical aspects are velocity, time, force [how much, how fast, and how it is delivered], flight- and contact-time, and step-length and step-frequency.
These things really matter.
Step 2 is “how do we measure them?”
Traditionally, coaches have been able to measure time and average velocity with technology as simple as a tape measure and a stopwatch – but that’s about it. We might be able to use FreeLap or Brower to more accurately measure time, but figuring out step frequency, length, contact time, flight time, and any of the force elements, have generally required a level of sophistication that simply has not been available to most coaches.
Until now.
For almost 18 months, we have been working with our super-smart friends at VueMotion to develop a product that brings the biomechanics lab to the field or the track – and we are almost ready to release it to the world.
Motion-IQ will change the way you coach.
You may know what they do – but do you know how they do it?
From Shotgun to Sniper
Only when you know how an athlete moves, will you be able to accurately determine what needs to change. This targeted approach will take your coaching to the next level. You’ll have the power of a biomechanics lab out on the track or field with you.
And you will use this information to not only improve the technique of your athletes, but improve their performance and mitigate injury risk.
Interested in Motion-IQ?
I’ve put together this short video to show you some of its features. I think you’ll really dig it.
