Core questions in ecology focus on the ecological factors that shape communities and what the consequences for those change might be. Our research uses microbes and fungi in particular to test key paradigms in ecology. Here I briefly outline why fungi are ideal systems to test broader principles, whether these theories hold up in microbial systems, and what the consequences are for changing fungal communities. As an example, I detail our exploration of fungal responses to repeated burning in systems where fire is common. To understand these communities, we use next-generation DNA sequencing and bioinformatic analyses on high performance computing cluster. We experimentally explore the consequences of changes in these communities for the buildup of fuels, a potential feedback that can impact future fires. Finally, I'll discuss the application of our work to create more sustainable agricultural systems and understand the process by which candidate fungi or other microbes could be used as test cases to understand the ecological constraints on life in space.
