Iranian Commander Warns of Renewed War as Peace Talks Stall
A senior Iranian military official warned on Saturday, May 2, 2026, that a return to active combat with the United States is "likely," accusing Washington of using diplomatic negotiations as a stall tactic to manipulate global energy markets.
Brigadier General Mohammad Jafar Asadi, a high-ranking commander within the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, issued the statement via the state-aligned Fars News Agency. The remarks come less than 24 hours after President Donald Trump signaled his dissatisfaction with a Pakistani-mediated peace proposal.
General Asadi dismissed recent overtures from the White House as disingenuous, suggesting that the American administration is more concerned with economic optics than regional stability.
A renewed conflict between Iran and the United States is likely. Evidence has shown that the United States is not committed to any promises or agreements. The actions and statements of American officials are mostly media-oriented, firstly to prevent the fall in oil prices and secondly to get out of the predicament they have created themselves, Asadi stated.
The warning follows a tense Friday in Washington, where the 60-day deadline for the War Powers Resolution expired. While the Trump administration notified Congress that hostilities had technically terminated due to a ceasefire in effect since early April, the U.S. Navy continues to enforce a total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—an act Tehran views as a continuing declaration of war.
Asadi’s comments suggest that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) may be losing patience with the "maximum pressure" blockade, which has effectively halted Iranian oil exports.
The "predicament" referenced by Asadi refers to the mounting domestic and international pressure on the U.S. government. While President Trump has promised American voters that his strategy will lead to tumbling oil prices, the ongoing military presence in the Persian Gulf has kept markets volatile.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry echoed Asadi’s sentiment later Saturday, stating that the ball is in the U.S. court to decide between a permanent diplomatic resolution or a return to kinetic engagement.
