7. SOUNDBITE (English) Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General:
“There is a long history of cooperation between UNESCO and Iraq. But we all know what Iraq has been through over the last decades, and we also know what the civilizations of this world owe to Iraq. So at UNESCO, we believed it was our duty to be along (meaning alongside/with) the Iraqi people, along the Iraqi authorities, to support the renewal of the education, of the culture, of the science in this country after those terrible years.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General:
“And here in the National Museum, there is another important issue I would like to mention for which UNESCO is very committed to assisting Iraq. It's the recuperation of the cultural goods and artifacts that have been looted over the last decades, and that we... for which are supporting through our international norms, but also operational support, so that it comes back to Iraq, in Iraq, where it belongs, where the scientists can put them in their context and study them for the benefit of humanity.”

STORYLINE:
The head of UNESCO visited historic sites in Baghdad on Monday and assured Iraq of her support in recovering antiquities looted over decades from the country.
Audrey Azulay visited the majestic al-Qushla clock tower that overlooks the Tigris river, Baghdad's al-Mutanabbi Street and the Iraqi National Museum, as part of her trip.
The al-Qushla clock tower square has become a meeting point for musicians, poets, the educated and a place for free expression for Iraqis after the US invasion in 2003.
Its construction dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century AD, during the Ottoman era, and it is located on the Rusafa side of Baghdad.
Al-Mutanabbi Street, locally known as "Books Street", is named for the 10th century poet Abu al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi.
Though it suffered from neglect and wars, as well as a devastating 2007 suicide bombing, Baghdad's ancient center of culture and literature and knowledge continues to thrive.
Azoulay concluded her day in Baghdad with a visit to the Iraqi National Museum.
She pledged UNESCO's support for Iraq and vowed to assist in the recovery of artifacts stolen from Iraq.
