Herbert Geddes, a manager for a Canadian import-export business, gathered these glass-plate photos of everyday life in Japan in Yokohama between 1908 and 1918. These kinds of images were initially offered as postcards or mementos to foreign travelers who were interested in Japan.

These images depict a variety of subjects, including civil constructions like temples, bridges, and streets; scenes of work like silk factories, rice paddying, and farming; and portraits of common people offering a close-up look at Japan's bygone past. 🎥

Some viewers might find the old pictures upsetting. The reputation of human nature and our history is unfortunate. Our predecessors were forced to capture images of war, torture, or bad events in order to commemorate certain events.
