Today we're going to be learning some Native American history. The Wampanoag people were the first tribe of Native Americans to meet the pilgrims in 1620 on the tip of Provincetown, Cape Cod. The were also the tribe of American Indians who joined the pilgrims for the first thanksgiving in 1621. These new visitors were not prepared at all for the harsh New England winters and without the help of the Wampanoag people they most likely would have not survived at all. The natives taught them how and what to hunt, forage, and grow. The Native American Indians knew that plating the three sisters, corn, squash, and beens helped to produce a better yield, crucial to their survival.
Sadly, the European settlers brought with them war and disease, nearly decimating the Wampanoag people. Their numbers dwindled from 65,000 down to just 400. Today, there are 4000-500 Wampanoag people living in the area.
