General Characteristics of Microbes
Lecture-7
Staining Method
Applied Microbiology
Microbes are tiny living organisms that are invisible to the naked eye but play a crucial role in health, disease, and the environment. Unit 2: General Characteristics of Microbes introduces nursing students to the morphology, structure, and functions of different microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and algae.
Bacteria are unicellular organisms that can be classified by shape (cocci, bacilli, spirilla), staining (Gram-positive, Gram-negative), and oxygen requirement. They reproduce by binary fission and may cause infections like pneumonia or tuberculosis.
Viruses are acellular, smaller than bacteria, and require a living host cell to multiply. They cause diseases such as influenza, measles, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis.
Fungi may be unicellular (yeast) or multicellular (mold). They can be beneficial (antibiotic production) but also cause infections like candidiasis.
Protozoa are unicellular eukaryotes that cause diseases such as malaria and amoebiasis. Algae are mostly non-pathogenic but can produce toxins.
This unit also emphasizes microbial growth, nutrition, reproduction, and pathogenicity. For nurses, understanding these general characteristics is essential for infection control, aseptic techniques, and patient care.
