LAGOS FIRE SERVICE URGES CORPS MEMBERS TO PRIORITIZE FIRE SAFETY AS LIFE SKILL
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service visits the NYSC Lagos Orientation Camp, Iyana Ipaja, to sensitize corps members on the importance of fire safety and emergency preparedness as vital life skills.
Fire Officer Shofela Temitope, who leads the session, explains the science behind fire — the “fire triangle” made up of fuel, heat, and oxygen — and how removing any one of these elements can extinguish a fire. She walks corps members through practical methods of fire control, including cooling with water, starving the fire of fuel, and smothering flames to cut off oxygen supply.
The lecture also covers the major causes of fire incidents, from negligence such as leaving cooking unattended or refueling a running generator, to natural causes and arson. Corps members learn to identify the different classes of fire, the appropriate types of fire extinguishers, and the importance of early response.
Officer Temitope further demonstrates essential safety actions like the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” technique for when clothing catches fire. She urges corps members to always stay alert, raise an alarm immediately, and call the Fire Service via 767 or 112 in case of emergencies.
The interactive session inspires participants to see fire safety not just as a precaution, but as a vital life skill every citizen should master.
