WHAT TO GROW AND SOW IN MARCH IN THE SUBTROPICS
___________________________________________________________
If you're living in a subtropical climate in Australia, now is the PERFECT time to get sowing and growing. The heat of Summer has finally subsided, hopefully the bugs are becoming less and less and the soils are (hopefully) nice and alive from all the late Summer rain. There aren't too many rules on what you can/can't grow in March - it's an open playing field! Here are some of the plants you can get sowing/growing and some that I probably wouldn't risk planting. Enjoy!
What to sow/plant NOW (not all but you get the general idea!):
tomatoes (make sure these and pretty much all other veggies get at least 6 hours sun per day
cucumber
zucchini
corn
herbs (except some that bolt easily)
capsicum
eggplant
brassicas (late March/early April)
sweet potato
beetroot
strawberry runners
FLOWERS! I'm planting zinnias, aster, everlasting daisy, alyssum, sunflowers
subtropical flower bulbs
beans
What not to sow/grow yet (unless you have growing conditions to do so!):
okra
rosella
pumkins
melon
rhubarb
greens (e.g. lettuce/spinach)
carrots (seeds can wash away with the heavy downpours so keep this in mind!)
some herbs (especially coriander and chamomile)
radish
Obviously these lists will differ in your specific climate, particularly if you live in a microclimate and get early cool temperatures, but this is a general guide to follow. Happy Gardening!!

Hey there!
Welcome to my channel, The Nature Patch where I like to share all things gardening, cooking and environmental science in my Australian bushland backyard.
My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist working towards completing a PhD in understanding how people's wellbeing and their connection to nature is impacted by land use change. I've always loved gardening and nature and lately have been interested in growing my own organic food!
On this channel you'll find videos relating to my harvests, 'how to' videos, composting, soil health, ecosystem services, and seed saving.
I try to upload twice a week and I hope you enjoy!!
