Guild Wars (2005) is the classic online fantasy RPG by ArenaNet, first released in April 2005. Set in the world of Tyria, gameplay features cooperative play, competitive PvP, and a character-based combat system that rewards planning and teamwork. Builds are highly flexible, built from a wide pool of 1,324 player skills across 10 professions, making strategy and preparation the focus of many adventures. Up to 24 players may participate in the largest combat instances, raising the question of how many combatants are needed to make an MMO truly "massive".

The major releases are Prophecies (2005), Factions (2006), Nightfall (2006), and the expansive add-on Eye of the North (2007). Each campaign introduced new regions, professions, stories, and playstyles while remaining fully interconnected.

Guild Wars: Reforged (December 3, 2025) is the rebranded original Guild Wars . Pricing of $20 for the campaign trilogy, plus $10 for the GW:EotN expansion, totals $30 for all end-game content. Besides the strong focus on cooperative play and deep PvP roots, Guild Wars has no subscription fee, a design choice that remains one of its most cited features among returning veterans and new players alike.
