You can retire on £20,000 a year, and for a single person who owns their home outright the pot you actually need is around £167,000, not the £300,000 or £400,000 the big calculators throw at you. Those calculators quietly ignore your biggest asset, because the full new State Pension of £12,548 a year does most of the heavy lifting and your own pot only has to cover the gap on top.
This video walks through how much pension you need to retire on £20,000 a year, whether £20,000 a year is enough to live on, and how the numbers change if you want to retire early at 60. Every figure is in today's money, so you can see what your pot can actually buy rather than a scary headline number.
HOW MUCH PENSION DO YOU NEED TO RETIRE ON £20,000 A YEAR?
Retiring at 67, your pot only needs to top up the roughly £7,500 a year the State Pension does not cover, which works out at about £167,000 run to age 90. That leaves a deliberate buffer of around £40,000 in the pot for the unexpected.
IS £20,000 A YEAR ENOUGH TO RETIRE ON?
It sits comfortably above the Pensions UK minimum of £13,900 for a single person, and ONS data shows the average retired household spends around £22,000 a year, often for a couple. Mortgage-free, £20,000 covers the essentials with room to breathe.
HOW MUCH MORE DO YOU NEED TO RETIRE AT 60 INSTEAD OF 67?
Stopping at 60 means your pot funds the full £20,000 alone for seven years before any State Pension arrives, pushing the pot you need up to roughly £264,000. That is about £97,000 more, and it buys you seven years of freedom before the State Pension shows up.
