STORYLINE
On a chilly Saturday night in April, aristocrats joined artists and intellectuals to boogie down on the sprawling 7,000-plus acre Montagu estate in Beaulieu, southern England.
They came dressed in polyester and platforms to celebrate in the name of charity, the King, and one of his biggest fans.
"I've always loved Elvis and I'm a girl of the 60s," said Fiona Montagu, a philanthropist and the wife of Edward, Lord Montagu. "Elvis makes everybody happy."
Lady Montagu said she discovered the King later in life - but was immediately hooked on his voice and wanted to honour his talent at her 70th birthday party.
As guest of honour, Lady Montagu sported a custom-made jewelled jumpsuit for the event, which drew the more than 300 guests from London, New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong and the local county of Hampshire.
A pink Cadillac and cutout of the King himself greeted guests as they arrived at Beaulieu's National Motor Museum, on the Montagu estate in southern England.
Tunes blared from speakers at the entrance to the party - one more way to capture a voice Montagu praised as full of soul.
The celebrants rocked jewelled jumpsuits and metallic sunglasses.
There was a wheelchair-bound and cape-wearing Lord Montagu - a former British politician whose imprisonment for engaging in homosexual acts ultimately led to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK - in the thick of it, flashing Elvis poses and greeting the costume-clad attendees.
Blue suede shoes were in abundance among the crowd clinking champagne glasses surrounded by classic cars, some driven by stars such as Marlene Dietrich.
