July 2022: The NHGS school runs their 6th coast to coast ride.
Students are in Year 7 (11 year old) to Year 10 (14 year old).
They carry most of their own gear. They decide, buy and cook their own meals on single burner stoves. They setup and take down their camp each day.
The purpose of the trip is to engage the students in a mini adventure. They get to be outside in nature away from the distractions of social media. They get to be independent and learn how to operate safely whilst cooking on camp. They build team skills by helping and supporting each other. Hopefully, by the end of the trip they have greater self confidence and feel a massive sense of accomplishment. It would be great if this influences their decisions to put them on a path to strive for greater successes.
This is our 6th coast to coast ride and each one has had different challenges.
2016 - Way of the Roses Route (35 riders)
2017 - Lake District Route (40+ riders)
2018 - Way of the Roses Route (45 riders)
2019 - Way of the Roses Route and Three Peak Walk (46 riders) YES! you read that correct. We did the cycling route backwards and on the penultimate day the students walked The Three Peaks. Pen y Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside.
2020 to 2021 - Covid years
2022 - Hadrians Wall Route (18 riders) This was the summer of 40 degree heatwaves.
2023 - Hadrians Wall Route (23 riders) This was a wet ride with a couple of hard days to get through. Setting up wet tents is not pleasant at any age.
We follow the @WalkWheelCycleTrust routes for these trips as they are low traffic, safe and interesting.
Leadership training has been provided by @CyclingUK Several of the staff are trained in Advanced Mountain Bike Instructor and Multi Day Tour Leader Certification.
In the past @alpkit foundation has donated vouchers to enable the school to purchase bike bags or single burner stoves.
Local bike shops also show their support by offering to service students bikes before the trip. These shops include. Blazing Saddles in Hebden Bridge and Happy Days Cycles in Sowerby Bridge.
